Containers allow goods to be stored for transport in trucks, trains and ships enabling intermodal transport. They are commonly used to transport heavy materials or palletized goods. They are used to protect the transported cargo from shocks and bad weather conditions, keeping the stored products intact.

Depending on the type of product to be shipped, containers may vary in dimensions, structure, material, etc. The measurements and other characteristics of these containers were standardized, something that speeded up transport without the need to load and unload the goods along the way. There are different containers that every operator engaged in transport should be aware of.

Standard / Dry Van

They are the standard containers and most used on the market. Of basic construction, metallic, hermetically closed and without refrigeration or ventilation. They have different sizes: 20′, 40′ o 40′ High Cube. High Cube category, facilitates a 13% increase in internal cubic capacity and is intended for the heaviest loads (coal, tobacco, etc.).
It is suitable for any type of dry load: pallets, boxes, bags, machines, furniture, etc.

Open Top

Of the same measures as the previous ones, but open by the top as they have a removable canvas roof. The goods may stand out but, in that case, supplements are paid depending on how much cargo has ceased to be charged for this excess.
These containers facilitate the transport of bulky loads.

Flat Rack

Just like the Open top, but they also lack side walls and even, in some cases, front and back walls. They are used for atypical loads and pay supplements in the same way as open top.

Reefer

Reefer containers provide a temperature-controlled environment. They have a power supply that connects to power sources during transport. This allows products to be transported at a constant temperature throughout the journey. You have the possibility to lower the temperature from -18° to -30°. There are 2 models, 20 and 40 foot, in addition to the High Cube.
This type of container is especially recommended for transporting food or products that need a low storage temperature.

Bulk

It is a container used to transport dry bulk cargo, such as chemicals, cement, fertilizers, flour, salt, etc. The goods are introduced into the container through an upper hatch and through hoses or flexible pipes.

Tank

Used to transport liquids, from hazardous as toxic chemicals, corrosive, highly combustible, as well as oils, milk, beers, wine, mineral water, etc. They have the same dimensions as a Dry Ban, but their structure is different, since they include a polyethylene tank inside.

In conclusion, there are different types of containers, which adapt to the needs of freight transport.
